How to Read Your Propane Tank Gauge
Your propane gas gauge is located under the dome at the top of the tank. It has bold black numbers encircling the gauge and a single pointer needle that indicates the percentage of gas in the tank, from 5 to 95.
Your tank is considered full at 80%, as that allows for the expansion of propane vapor. For your safety and protection, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have your tank filled BEFORE the gauge goes below 20%.
This chart shows how many gallons of propane you have in your tank at a given percentage.
Note: if your tank has a gauge that ranges 0-300, that is pressure, not percentage.
How to Turn Off Your Propane Tank
To shut off your propane tank, turn the shutoff valve clockwise, or to the right.
Propane Safety Tips for Severe Weather
- Create an emergency preparedness plan and review it with everyone in your family. Have a list with AGRILAND FS propane emergency numbers and other utilities and emergency services (electricity, fire department, etc.) along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity, and water.
- If you turn your propane off, do not turn it back on yourself! Contact AGRILAND FS to have one of our trained Propane Service Specialists inspect your propane system before the propane is turned back on.
- Consider installing uL-listed propane gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These detectors provide you with an additional measure of security. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation, location, and maintenance.
- If a flood threatens your safety, you should shut off your propane. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, if it is safe to do so. It’s also a good idea to turn off the gas supply valves located near individual indoor appliances.
- After severe and damaging weather passes, and it is safe to do so, check the entire area for downed power lines, damaged gas lines, or damage to your propane tank. High winds, hail, and tornadoes can move, shift, or damage propane gas lines and tanks. If it is dark, use flashlights, not candles to inspect everything. Immediately call AGRILAND FS if any of these hazards exist. Do not attempt any propane repairs yourself!
- Never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas, especially during a power outage. This can result in carbon monoxide poisoning or death. These include outdoor portable heaters, barbecue grills, and portable generators. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use. It’s also important that you never store, place, or use a propane cylinder indoors or in enclosed areas such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent. If you are concerned about being without power, consider purchasing a propane-powered stand-by generator, so you always have reliable power, even during blackouts.
- If you suspect any of your propane appliances or equipment have been under water or damaged, or you have turned off your propane supply, DO NOT use these items or turn on your propane tank! Contact AGRILAND FS to have one of our trained Propane Service Specialists perform an inspection of your propane system and turn your tank back on.
Winter Propane Safety Tips
- Mark your tank. Tanks can easily be buried in snow during the course of winter. If you mark your tank with an indicator, it’s easier for your delivery driver to find and fill your tank.
- Keep an eye on your tank level. If your tank reaches 30%, contact us to schedule your delivery ASAP. Even on an automatic delivery program, we need you to keep an eye on your propane tank levels, unless you have a tank monitor. Interested in a propane tank monitor? Contact us today!
- Keep your regulator clear of snow. Don't let snow cover your regulator. Make sure it is clear of blowing and accumulating snow. Packed snow will impact the tank readings and can be a safety concern. Also, make sure to keep snow and ice from building up on your building’s exhaust vents.
- Clear a path to your tank. Your Propane Delivery Specialist makes multiple deliveries every day, so make their day a little easier – please shovel or snow blow a path to your tank to ensure it can be filled in a timely manner.
- Plow, salt, and sand driveways, sidewalks, and walkways. Please plow and salt or sand your driveway so your Propane Delivery Specialist can safely access your property and tank. If the truck can't safely enter, your delivery can't happen. Also, salting sidewalks ensures your safety and the safety of others.
General Propane Safety Tips & Information
- Call AGRILAND FS before you dig. 811 will not locate propane lines. Please call your local AGRILAND FS Propane Specialist at least 48 hours before you plan to dig to allow us to locate your propane line.
- Keep all open flames away from propane tanks. Burn barrels, fire pits, and other open flames should be kept away from all propane containers.
- Mow around propane tanks at a safe distance. Mowing too close to a propane tank could knock the tank off its concrete blocks, which could lead to gas line damage. Maintain a distance that prevents tires or other parts of your mower from coming in contact with the tank.
- Do not paint your propane tank a dark color. Dark colors absorb sunlight, so to prevent your propane tank from heating up and over pressurizing, your tank color should be a light color to reflect sunlight. We think a bright white tank with a light gray dome is the best look for a propane tank!
- Make sure your propane cylinders have an OPD valve. Smaller propane cylinders such as for your grill should have an Overfill Protection Device (OPD) valve on them. You can tell if it is an OPD valve by its triangle-shaped valve wheel.
- No smoking within 25 feet of a propane tank or regulators. Do not smoke a minimum of 25 feet away from propane containers or regulators.
- Contact AGRILAND FS any time you have a change in your propane system. If you add or remove any propane appliances or equipment, one of our professionals will need to complete a safety check on your propane system to ensure there are no leaks or issues.
- Don’t let kids play on top of propane tanks. Climbing and playing on top of a propane tank might look like fun, but it can be dangerous. The pressure relief valve on the tank opens and releases high pressure gas, and this could result in serious injury if someone is near it when that happens. Also, tampering with the gas line could result in a propane leak.
- When transporting propane cylinders, they should be secured in an upright position. Transport propane cylinders safely in your vehicle by securing them upright, so they can’t fall, shift, or roll in transit.
- Only approved propane cylinders should be used on gas grills. Some propane containers are made for liquid withdrawal and some for vapor. It is important to make sure you are only using containers that are designed for your specific propane application needs. Failure to follow this guideline could result in property damage or injury.
- If your propane tank is in an area prone to flooding, make sure it is anchored. Full propane tanks will float, so anchoring down your tank prevents it from floating off.
- No combustibles against the propane tank. Bushes and plants should be cleared out around propane tanks. Also, do not hang hoses, rugs, horse saddles, etc. on your propane tank.
- Do not build enclosures around the tank. Pressure relief valves must be in an open space so they can operate properly if they need to release pressure.
- Do not smoke in a vehicle when hauling cylinders. When transporting propane cylinders in any type of vehicle, do not smoke!
- Don't plant flowers or shrubs directly in front of the regulator on the building. Propane regulators need open space to properly vent. Make sure plants and shrubs are not touching regulators on your home or building.
